Cracks and Deterioration
This is a pretty obvious sign that you need to replace your cover. Chemicals, weather and time can damage your cover and cause it to look brittle or fragile. If the cover sags in the middle, it’s likely due to water damage and bacteria. Take a good, hard look at your pool cover to ensure the vinyl is still in good shape.
Foul Odor and Weight
When water seeps into the cover, which is inevitable, it causes the cover to gain weight. So, if you notice your cover is particularly harder to move than it was when you bought it, it’s possible you need to replace it. Also, if you smell something foul coming from the cover, it’s likely due to bacteria growth. Wet, hot environments are perfect for bacteria, and your spa provides that for them so the cover can serve as a home.
How to Prevent Damage
When you add chemicals to the water, make sure to leave the cover off for at least half an hour–the chemicals can damage your cover pretty quickly if it’s allowed to. Another way to protect your cover is to frequently wipe it down and keep it dry. When you do this, it prevents water and bacteria from gathering in your cover.
